Host learning selects for the coevolution of greater egg mimicry and narrower antiparasitic egg-rejection thresholds

چکیده

Abstract Egg rejection is an effective and widespread antiparasitic defense to eliminate foreign eggs from the nests of hosts brood parasitic birds. Several lines observational critical experimental evidence support a role for learning by in recognition versus own eggs; specifically, individual that have had prior or current experience with parasitism are more likely reject eggs. Here we confirm experimentally altering subsequent egg-rejection decisions American robin Turdus migratorius, free-living host species obligate parasite, brown-headed cowbird Molothrus ater. We then model coevolutionary trajectory both extent mimicry host’s egg thresholds response increasing recognition. Critically, learning, see evolution narrower (more discriminating) greater parasites. Increasing clutch size (number eggs/nest) parasite load (parasitism rate) also narrowing effects on threshold. Together, these results suggest may play important coevolution egg-mimetic lineages parasites refined defenses hosts.

Dynamic egg color mimicry

Evolutionary hypotheses regarding the function of eggshell phenotypes, from solar protection through mimicry, have implicitly assumed that eggshell appearance remains static throughout the laying and incubation periods. However, recent research demonstrates that egg coloration changes over relatively short, biologically relevant timescales. Here, we provide the first evidence that such changes ...

Attractive blue-green egg coloration and cuckoo-host coevolution

Recent evidence suggests that blue-green coloration of bird eggshells may be related to female and/or egg phenotypic quality, and that such colour may affect parental effort and therefore the nutritional environment of developing nestlings. Here we suggest that these relationships and the signal function of eggshell coloration would affect the outcome of coevolution between avian brood parasite...

Are Cuckoos Maximizing Egg Mimicry by Selecting Host Individuals with Better Matching Egg Phenotypes?

BACKGROUND Avian brood parasites and their hosts are involved in complex offence-defense coevolutionary arms races. The most common pair of reciprocal adaptations in these systems is egg discrimination by hosts and egg mimicry by parasites. As mimicry improves, more advanced host adaptations evolve such as decreased intra- and increased interclutch variation in egg appearance to facilitate dete...

A brood parasite selects for its own egg traits

Many brood parasitic birds lay eggs that mimic their hosts' eggs in appearance. This typically arises from selection from discriminating hosts that reject eggs which differ from their own. However, selection on parasitic eggs may also arise from parasites themselves, because it should pay a laying parasitic female to detect and destroy another parasitic egg previously laid in the same host nest...

Egg color variation, but not egg rejection behavior, changes in a cuckoo host breeding in the absence of brood parasitism

Interactions between parasitic cuckoos and their songbird hosts form a classical reciprocal "arms race," and are an excellent model for understanding the process of coevolution. Changes in host egg coloration via the evolution of interclutch variation in egg color or intraclutch consistency in egg color are hypothesized counter adaptations that facilitate egg recognition and thus limit brood pa...
